The 2024 Snookerz Open was held at Woking Snooker Centre ; 27 & 28 April, 2024.
The event was capped at 48 players and was sold out, although we did in the end have two no shows that we we’re unable to re assign to other players on the waiting list. This meant that we played 110 matches on Day 1. Then Open was designed, by way of discounted entries, to encourage everyone to enter, regardless of age, ability or gender. We we’re delighted to see such a varied collection of players, which included WWS, WDBS & U16 players. The standard of play was incredibly impressive from the start and decent breaks started flying in all over around the event. Its always great to see so many people in one place enjoying the game. A special mention goes to young Freddie Smith who’s just started playing the game and although he told me it was a little bit of a baptism of fire, he really enjoyed being involved.
We we’re also delighted to see both WWS tour ladies that entered, Jasmine Bolsover and Mary Talbot do very well and indeed Jasmine got through to Day 2; The last 16, where she only just lost out , in a very close match 3-2 to Matt Ford. Reprsenting WDBS players we we’re delighted to welcome Steven Cartwright, Dave Waller and Dalton Lawrence, who all gave a great account of themselves and , as I have before, I’d like to go on record and say how inspired I always am when watching those from the WDBS tour play.
The line up was indeed very strong and this was illustrated from the Last 16 line up. We’re very proud at Snookerz that so many strong Amateur players chose to join us, and indeed a number of these players, such as Peter Devlin, Wayne Townsend and Billy Castle have, at previous points in their careers, competed on the professional, main tour. As mentioned earlier , we had numerous breaks over 40 and its possible that not all we’re reported to us. We had a minimum of 64 breaks over 40, and 7 centuries, which included a magnificent 132 Total Clearance from Wayne Townsend which took the £100 high break prize.
Centuries: Wayne Townsend 132, 104 ;Peter Devlin 124, 108 ; Billy Castle 118, 101; Matt Ford 108
On Day 2, the great snooker continued with some very close matches as one would expect. We’re sorry that the stream of the final has no sound, this was due to a technical issue , but we hope you still enjoyed what was a very close and exciting match between Wayne Townsend & Peter Devlin. The final was eventually won with a superb , under pressure, ‘dish’ from Wayne meaning that he took the title, 3-2, winning £600 for the win and £100 for the high break prize. Peter won £225 for his second place , and himself , had a fantastic weekend.
I’d like to thank everyone that took part and of course Woking Snooker Centre , Pete Ruddick and the team at Woking for their great support before and throughout the tournament.
We hope to be back late summer with the Bob Mason Open – watch this space.
